Summary
John begins before creation: "In the beginning was the Word," who became flesh in Jesus. The Gospel is built around seven signs โ such as turning water into wine and raising Lazarus โ and Jesus' "I am" sayings, which reveal who he is.
It includes Jesus' extended teaching to his disciples on the night before his death, his prayer for them, and his death and resurrection. John states his purpose clearly: these things are written "that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."
