Summary
Genesis is the book of beginnings: the creation of the world, the first man and woman, the entrance of sin, the flood, and the scattering of the nations at Babel. Against this backdrop of human rebellion, God calls Abraham and promises that through his family all the peoples of the earth will be blessed.
The rest of the book follows that promise through Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. Despite deceit, rivalry and failure, God keeps his word, and the book closes with Jacob's family preserved in Egypt and Joseph's confession that God turns evil to good.
