Summary

Haggai spoke to the exiles who had returned to Jerusalem but had stopped rebuilding the temple while they built their own houses. He urges them to "give careful thought to your ways" and to put God first.

The people respond, and the work resumes. Haggai encourages them that, though the new temple seems modest, God is with them and its future glory will be greater than the former. He also points to Zerubbabel as a sign of God's continuing promise to David's line.
